Sarli Journal's One Year Anniversary
So it has been an entire year since the first post of the Sarli Journal.
This Journal was started to herald the revelation that our ancestor Joseph Louis Mott was born Rocco Vincenzo Sarli in Laurenzana, Italy on August 12, 1857. He was the needle-in-the-haystack that was found by a lot of prayer and research by many, and advances in dna testing, .
While Rocco/Joseph lived, he was a son, a grandson, a brother, an orphan, a nephew, a cousin, an emigrant musician, a wanderer, and then a settler, a farmer, a husband, a father of sons, a son-in-law, a brother-in-law, and a San Luis Valley harpist. Then he died at age 36.
How about some "shout-outs" and "birthday wishes" from anyone and everyone that reads and appreciates these posts. The way to do so is to click on the pencil icon at the bottom of this article -- and write your comments.
Also, if you have any questions to ask, or photos or information to share, please do so! Remember, just click on the pencil. I'll get it started.
Happy Birthday, Sarli Journal!!!

Deletecan you explain the relationship of Sarli family relatives to the Martoccia family, my great great grandmother is Maria Magdalena Martoccia who had a sister that I am told is related to Joseph Luigi Mott. Maria Magdalena Martoccia married Rocco Vincenzo Pavese who is my great great grandfather. They had many children including my grandfather Egidio (George )Pavese who's brother is one of the musicicans that left Laurenzana Potenza Basilicata Italy and changed his name from Giovanni Pavese to John Davis as many Italians who were fleeing from danger and settled in Utah and married Ruth Alred and who became known as Johnny the fiddler. Other brothers that John Davis found in NY were my great Uncle Francesco Pavese and my grandfather George Pavese. George Pavese married my grandmother Teresa Zito and had many children including Madeline, Rose, Vincent, Frank Pavese ,my dad,Mildred Pavese, Rose Pavese, Palma Pavese, Mary Pavese,Joseph Pavese,. I am Marie Pavese, my sister Teresa Pavese and late brother Richard Pavese
ReplyDeleteHello Marie! Thank you for posting. The Pavese name is very familiar. My uncle, Dr. Joe Mott, and I have worked to gather information and he has posted articles to this blog. I'm taking a look at this and will get back with you soon. My email is dr_doremi@yahoo.com and if you will write me a short note there, then I can send you a link to a Pavese family tree I have built. - Elizabeth
DeleteMarie, as you have read on this blog, Joseph Louis Mott was the name that Rocco Vincenzo Sarli chose for himself, once in America. He was born in Laurenzana on August 12, 1857, and his parents were Egidiantonio Sarli (1817-1860) and Maria Carmela Marone (1821-1869). It appears that he was related to Motta's through his mother's brothers. Vita Maria Marone, daughter of Vito Nicola Marone (Maria Carmela's brother) and second wife Anna Maria Motta, married Giovanni Martoccia, son of Rocco Vincenzo Martoccia and Maria Finocchio on July 11, 1903 in Laurenzana. They arrived in America later in 1903. Also, Maria Carmela's brother Donatantonio Marone (1836-) married Rosa Gaetana Martoccia (1839-), daughter of Nicola Vincenzo Martoccia & Anna Gaetana Pecora, on July 16, 1861. Worth mentioning is that Rocco Sarlo (1784-1844), son of Saverio Sarlo (1750-)(earliest Sarlo ancestor we've been able to find) married Maria Maddalena Martoccia (1791-1844) Nov 3, 1810. She was the daughter of Lonardo Martoccia (1771-) and Angela Romano (1774-). I can show you more information if you will email me. I hope that this is helpful. - Sincerely, Elizabeth
